Free give-away bags from libraries in Laois to school starters

LAOIS County Library Service has announced the return of the hugely popular free-give away ‘My Little Library Bag’.
The ‘My Little Library Book Bag’ initiative is a program that provides free books and a library card to every child starting school in September. It aims to encourage a love of reading and learning and build strong links between young children and their local library.
Staff in the eight libraries around Laois – Durrow, Mountmellick, Mountrath, Portlaoise, Abbeyleix, Rathdowney, Portarlington and Stradbally - have put together a bag of books and resources to help children starting primary school in September and are welcome to call their local library and collect their very own library card and wallet and library bag.
County Librarian Bernie Foran said: “Reading is a magical gift and it is great to give children the opportunity to develop a love of reading. We hope that these book bags will ignite a lifelong love of reading and learning in every child as they embark on this exciting new chapter.
“The library service encourages children and their families to visit regularly. We have a wide selection of children's books and run many exciting events throughout the year.”
Each free bag contains a book on starting school, making friends or being comfortable with oneself, along with a library card and cardholder.
Parental information on school transitions is included in the bags to support children on their learning journey.
The book bags are available in both Irish and English.
