FUNERAL details have been announced for a man who died in a tragic road accident in Laois on Monday.

Gabriel-Ion Gal, who worked with Midland Steel, suffered fatal injuries when his bicycle crashed into a railing in Mountmellick at about 4.30pm.

Emergency services rushed to the scene on College Avenue and he was admitted to Midland Regional Hospital Portlaoise, where he passed away that night.

A resident of Mountmellick, he was aged in his 50s and is mourned by his wife, son and extended family. 

His death notice today on RIP.ie states that Gabriel died peacefully at Portlaoise Hospital as the result of an accident.

Formerly of College View, Mountmellick and Bacau, Romania, Gabriel was the beloved husband of Mihaela and adored father of Alexandru.

The death notice says: ‘He will be very sadly missed by his loving family, friends and work colleagues at Midland Steel.’ 

Reposal at Moloney’s Funeral Home, Mountmellick from 1pm on Friday, 8 May will be followed by removal at 1.40pm to St Joseph's Church, Mountmellick for prayer service at 2pm.

Mass will be live-streamed on the parish webcam and sympathisers can express their condolences on RIP.ie.

Gabriel-Ion’s funeral will take place in Romania at a later date.

Gardaí are still appealing for witnesses following the crash. They are also appealing to any road users who may have camera footage from the area at the time of the collision, including dash-cam, to make the footage available to gardaí.
