Granny knits 600 Easter chicks for Laois school

Grandmother Mary Carthy with some of her hand-knitted flock of chicks
AN eggceptional granny hand-knitted 600 Easter chicks to raise funds for the school attended by her beloved grandson.
With a Cadbury’s Crème Egg nestling in each colourful chick, the cracking gifts are a huge hit at Mountrath Community School.
Mary Carthy spent about 450 hours on the thoughtful task, with each chick taking 40 minutes to complete, and she isn’t finished yet. She carefully selects the wool herself in a range of eye-catching colours and charges only €2 each for the cheerful chicks.
The grandmother of a first year student in one of the school’s new ASD classrooms, Mary has taken on this generous task every year since her grandson was in pre-school.
Posting photos of the hand-crafted flock on social media, Mountrath CS management thanked Mary for her hard work and generosity, which has filled the school with festive spirit this Easter and raised thousands of euros over the years.
They added: ‘The school community has been delighted by Mary’s efforts and her grandson is especially proud of her work.’
All proceeds from sales of the 2025 flock will go to the school’s ASD classrooms, in a true labour of love that helps to provide invaluable supports for students.
