Independent councillor Aidan Mullins said that he will support Sinn Féin in its bid to win a seat in Laois in the upcoming general election.

AHEAD of Sinn Féin’s selection convention on Monday night to choose it’s candidate to contest the general election in Laois the secretary of the party Aaron Kelly said that the former Sinn Féin cllr Aidan Mullins is happy “to see a strong Sinn Féin candidate running in the general election in Laois.”

Mr Kelly said that while cllr Mullins resigned from the party earlier this year but remains a lifelong Republican and is happy to see a strong Sinn Féin candidate running in the general election in Laois.

He said that cllr Mullins has wished the Sinn Féin candidate the very best in the campaign.

Cllr Mullins confirmed to the ‘Laois Nationalist’ that he is happy with whoever Sinn Féin select as its candidate.

He resigned from the party after 51 years in August following difficulties with the party on its immigration, Hate Speech Bill and the referendums on Family and Care positions.

At the time of his resignation cllr Mullins said: “They had tried to silence me and had instructed me not to be posting anything contentious on my social media accounts. They wanted me to see no evil, say no evil and to just shut up and put nothing up on immigration.”

Mr Kelly said that he was also happy that cllr Caroline Dwane Stanley (the wife of former Sinn Féin TD Brian Stanley) “appears to have remained loyal to Sinn Féin and fully anticipate that, as our Sinn Féin councillor in Laois, Caroline will be supporting and endorsing our general election candidate alongside cllr Aidan Mullins.”

Deputy Brian Stanley is contesting the general election on an Independent Republican ticket.

Cllr Dwane Stanley did not return calls from the ‘Laois Nationalist’, before we went to print, to say whether she would support or endorse the Sinn Féin candidate.

Mr Kelly claimed: “While Brian Stanley carries out a character assassination on Sinn Féin, our focus is on the issues facing our constituents,” and are “looking forward to our selection convention on Monday night, with Uachtarán Shinn Féin, Mary Lou McDonald in attendance."

He said as well as selection it’s candidate on Monday night the party will also be launching its campaign “on the issues facing the good people of Laois in important areas such as housing, healthcare, education, farming, and community development.”

Anticipating that Maria McCormack will be selected as the party’s candidate, Mr Kelly said: “Sinn Féin have the policies, we have the team, and now we have the ideal candidate in Maria McCormack as she hopes to become the first ever female Laois TD.

“We look forward to fighting a strong campaign over the coming weeks and hearing all about the issues that only a Sinn Féin government can resolve. It truly is time for change.”
