A CAPTIVATING art display of vibrant pieces in a joint exhibition entitled The Colours of Life by Mary Carmody, Mags Coyne and Odette Harrington was launched in Abbeyleix Library and Gallery recently by local artist Aileen Donovan.
The three Laois artists met when they were studying QQI level 5 Art, Craft and Design together in Abbeyleix Further Education Centre (FEC) and all speak highly of their tutors, who they said are “wonderful teachers”.
Mary Carmody, who began painting five years ago, said: “Art is when you hear a knocking from your soul and you answer. I love dipping my toe into the myriad colours and techniques that I encounter through landscape, still life and portrait drawing.” Mags Coyne said: “My painting style is influenced by nature, landscapes and local scenery.” Mags has a keen interest in the use of combined materials as a form of artistic expression.
Odette Harrington said: “I entered the world of art following my retirement. I find inspiration from nature, historical stories and folk art. The recurrent themes in my work are rural life, identity and family connections.” Odette is now concentrating on experimenting with the challenges of creating ceramic work at home while continuing her painting.
Speaking on behalf of the three artists, Odette said: “We want to thank everyone for coming to our launch and we want to thank the library staff here in Abbeyleix for their wonderful support. We want to thank our wonderful tutors at Abbeyleix FEC and artist Aileen Donovan for agreeing to launch our exhibition.
“We all follow Aileen on Instagram and when we would walk out to Abbeyleix Bog past Bramley’s Café we would always admire Aileen’s combined media works, which were always on display in the windows.” Opening the exhibition, Aileen said: “I’d like to welcome everyone to the official opening of this absolutely beautiful exhibition by Mary Carmody, Odette Harrington and Mags Coyne. This is a captivating showcase of beautiful landscapes, figures, ceramics and experimental pieces that are on display here.
“I met Mary and Odette at a Culture Night event last year and Mags was a year ahead of me in school. All three ladies attended Abbeyleix FEC and what a great achievement for them to courageously decide to go to college later in life and pursue their passion.
“It’s a fantastic achievement and a testament to their drive and determination. Their beautiful collective artworks are inspired by their surroundings, landscapes, family and indeed by The Colours of Life. Well done to you all.” The exhibition remains on display until the end of November. More information is available from Abbeyleix Library on 057 8730020.
