DARK fiction author Dana Enache from Constanta in Romania launched her latest book in Portlaoise Library recently.
The talented writer moved to Ireland with her husband and their two children over 12 years ago and the family have been living in Portlaoise for almost a decade.
Evolution is Dana’s third book to be published in both English and Romanian. She is also the author of , a collection of psychological horror stories, and , a monster horror novella and her short stories have been published in several magazines and various other publications over the years.
Dana’s latest novel is a thrilling fast-paced dark thriller set 160 years in the future where there isn’t enough to eat for everybody, and humanity has evolved to drain energy from other people.
Speaking to the prior to her launch Dana said she has been writing since she was a teenager in school.
She said: “I’ve been writing for more than 20 years. I started with writing poetry in high school where I had a really good Romanian teacher. When I was 16, she gave me books by Edgar Allan Poe and Lord Byron, and these got me hooked on the horror genre. She was an editor for a local literary magazine and asked me to write some prose saying that if it was good enough, she could get it published. I wrote three stories and gave them to her, and she published two of them in different editions.” When asked about the plot and the setting for Evolution Dana said: “In the future, 160 years from now there isn’t enough to eat for everybody, and humanity has evolved into Metahumans classed as MET 1 and MET 2.
“MET 1 people can drain energy from others with a simple touch and MET 2 people have evolved to heal very fast, untouchable by fatal diseases.
“Jack is a homeless man who lost his family through alcohol and he’s willing to do anything to get them back. When a team of scientists offer him a chance to get off the streets, he agrees to take part in their illegal cryogenics experiments and wakes up 160 years into the future in an abandoned facility with unexpected abilities.
“Elena lost her husband and is raising her children on her own, but she is determined to adopt 14-year-old Andrew who is living at the Institute of MET Children but neither her nor her biological children are MET.
“Andrew’s world is turned upside-down when he finds out that cult leader Joshua (a man who was born with both MET abilities) has taken a keen interest in him. Joshua believes that he is the true leader of the world and that everyone should recognise him as top of the food chain and the new link in the evolution of humanity.
“We have to read the book to see if Andrew will join Joshua in his quest for power, or maintain his innocence.” Dana writes while listening to music in her headphones and does most of her writing while waiting on her children to finish their activities. She wishes to thank the Portlaoise library staff, her husband Bogdan who does her technical work, her family, friends and readers, and the ***Laois Nationalist*** for covering her book launch.
