The Age Friendly Sports Day, organised by Westmeath County Council and hosted on the grounds of the Technological University of the Shannon, brought together people from Older People's Councils and community groups across the country for a day of activity and fun.

The Laois group in attendance took part in various Go for Life Games, walking football, movement-to-music, Tai Chi, seated yoga and activator poles; other counties represented included Longford, Offaly, Roscommon and Westmeath.

With a growing interest nationwide in active lifestyles, especially among the older cohort in Irish society, this event was instrumental, staff believed, in highlighting the benefits of staying physically active, socially connected and engaged in community life.

The event also received a visit from Minister of State for Older People and Housing, Kieran O'Donnell TD, who praised initiatives that support healthy ageing and reduce social isolation. He said:

"Regular physical activity helps older people maintain their independence, improve their physical and mental wellbeing and reduce social isolation. Events like the Age Friendly Midlands Sports Taster Day are a great resource to showcase local initiatives for older people to stay active, try something new and make new connections."

Participants also had the chance to learn about programmes and initiatives that support active lifestyles and positive ageing in their local communities. The event concluded with a lively salsa session that saw participants dance their way through the afternoon.

Organisers said the Sports Taster Day reflected the ongoing commitment of local authorities, Age Friendly Ireland, Local Sports Partnerships and community organisations to creating age-friendly communities where older people can remain active, connected and fully involved in community life.
