Portlaoise Courthouse

A 36-YEAR-old Laois man who was allegedly caught in possession of 95 child pornography videos and who allegedly engaged in a sexual act with a child under the age of 16 was before last week’s sitting of Portlaoise District Court.

It is alleged that the sex act took place at an address in Co Laois on 25 October 2023, while the pornography videos were allegedly found in the man’s house on 19 November of the same year.

Noting that a book of evidence had been served on the man, who cannot be identified on the instructions of Judge Susan Fay, she sent him forward to the next sitting of Portlaoise Circuit Criminal Court on 16 June.

She gave the defendant an alibi, advising him that he must notify gardaí in writing within 14 days if he wished to rely on an alibi in his defence.

Garda sgt Colin O’Leary said that gardaí had no objection to bail being granted.

Defence solicitor Josephine Fitzpatrick was granted free legal aid for her client and a junior counsel was assigned to the case.
