A 22 YEAR old Portlaoise man who pleaded guilty to careless driving after a 12 year old boy was struck at a pedestrian crossing on Stradbally Road last November was fined €750 at the local district court.

The court had previously heard evidence of how the incident occurred on 12 November 2024 during a busy school period as the boy, who was cycling across the crossing, suffered serious injuries and was later transferred to Temple Street Children’s Hospital in Dublin.

Garda Sgt JJ Kirby had said the driver, Naasson Mazapi, Colliers Wood, Portlaoise had no previous convictions and that speed was not a factor in the incident.

Defence solicitor Philip Meagher said that his client’s view had been momentarily obscured by a road sign and that a driving ban would impact his work transporting service users in the healthcare sector.

Judge Andrew Cody fined Mr Mazapi €750 and did not impose a driving disqualification.
