Laois playground causes flooding in neighbours' gardens

RESIDENTS living beside a Laois playground regularly have their gardens flooded, because of storm water running off the site.

Despite repeated complaints, drainage works have yet to be carried out near the playground at St Fergal’s College in Rathdowney.

Laois County Council has finally indicated that flood relief works will be done at the site, years after complaints were first made.

At the February meeting of Borris-in-Ossory/Mountmellick Municipal District, Cllr John King recalled that he made a similar request about five years ago for drainage works, close to the public playground located at St Fergal’s. The playground is operated by the county council.

He said: “Neighbours’ gardens are continually getting flooded, due to these works not being carried out.”

He added that the playground opened more than 11 years ago and it was high time that the problem was resolved. The request was seconded by Cllr Ollie Clooney.

Cllr King said: “It is only a small job but it would stop gardens being flooded.”

Senior engineer Rory O’Callaghan said the drainage issue “is associated with storm water run-off from the playground area”.

He said: “The district office will carry out a level survey and will carry out the necessary works to alleviate the flooding.”
