Laois preservation group celebrates 50th anniversary with Civic Reception
A Civic Reception in County Hall was held in County Hally, Portlaois to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Aghaboe Abbey Preservation Committee
AGHABOE abbey preservation committee recently celebrated its 50th anniversary in collaboration with Laois Co Council and to commemorate the occasion, a civic reception was hosted in the council chamber.
The committee is an organisation that works to safeguard the historic Aghaboe abbey – a monastic era church founded in the sixth century and which lies about 30 minutes outside of Portlaoise by preserving its structures, heritage and the stories connected to the site and through carrying out conservation works, such as fundraising, research, and guided tours.
The inaugural municipal district civic reception was hosted by the cathaoirleach of Borris-in-Ossory/Mountmellick municipal district Cllr Conor Bergin and was attended by MD councillors, deputy Sean Fleming and Angela McEvoy, director of services with responsibility for the Borris in Ossory/Mountmellick MD. Members of the Aghaboe preservation committee were also present.
Cllr Bergin said: “We are delighted to celebrate 50 years of the Aghaboe abbey preservation committee. For half-a-century, the Aghaboe abbey preservation committee has safeguarded not just an historic site but the stories, identity and heritage that bind our community together. Their dedication has ensured that the legacy of this remarkable monastic settlement endures, preserving its stones, its history and its spirit for future generations.
‘‘This golden milestone is a testament to the committee’s unwavering commitment to protecting a place that continues to inspire pride, connection and a deep sense of belonging across our community.”
