Man to appear in court after gardaí seize drone, suspected drugs and mobile phones near Portlaoise prison campus

Gardaí attached to the Laois Drugs Unit and Laois Detective Unit intercepted a drone flying in close proximity to the Portlaoise Prison Campus, Co Laois, yesterday afternoon, Tuesday 6 October 2026

A drone and a package containing suspected cannabis and tablets, as well as mobile phones, were seized.

Two males (aged in their 30s and 40s) were arrested and were detained at a Garda Station in the Eastern Region under the provisions of Section 2 of the Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Act 1996.

A man in his 30s has since been charged and is due to appear before Tullamore District Court this morning, Wednesday 7 October 2026 at 10:30am.

A second male (aged in his 40s) has been released without charge. 

A file will be prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Investigations ongoing.
