MULTIPLE traffic surveys are set to be carried out in Laois, with Bracklone Street in Portarlington and Ballymorris Road also in Portarlington among the ones to be scrutinised.

Concerned about high speeds in both those areas, Cllr Aidan Mullins came to the latest meeting of the Graiguecullen/Portarlington Municipal District with proposals for traffic/speed surveys to be carried out in both areas.

In response, a representative of the Area Office told him that they were arranging to have the survey on Bracklone Street carried out in the coming weeks, while the survey on Bracken Street was already in place and gathering data – though a break in that survey would be conducted during the mid-term break, where traffic would naturally fall away given schools were out.

In making his case for the urgency of the issue, Cllr Aidan Mullins highlighted the immense volume of traffic he had seen tearing through Bracklone Street and zeroed in on a recent example where a resident parking on the road, which allow for parking on both sides of the street, had their wing mirrors torn off. He said:

“The volume of traffic is immense and it can be very difficult to cross that road on the street and I look forward to getting the intervention/data because it's going to show some intervention is needed on that street.” His motions were seconded by Cllr Paschal McEvoy and Cllr Vivienne Phelan respectively.
