UPDATES were sought regarding the progress of plans to install communication boards at Laois playgrounds.

At the monthly meeting of the Graiguecullen/Portarlington Municipal District meeting in April 2025, a response was given from the council that they would be installed in 50 percent of playground by the end of 2025, with the remaining 50 percent, Stradbally and Timahoe, set to be completed by the end of 2026.

In response to Cllr Vivienne Phelan's request for information, a representative of the Area Office said: “Communications boards are currently ordered and will be installed in phases over the coming months. The first six will be installed in the following playground by the end of November 2026. Ballyroan, Borris-in-Ossory, Stradbally, the Portlaoise Leisure Centre and Timahoe."

Cllr Phelan was pleased to hear that the boards, which used a host of images of pictures, tools, words, or objects to help children with communication issues be able to interact with their peers, would be a fantastic boon for children with additional needs and their families.

The motion was seconded by Councillor Paschal McEvoy.
