A DRIVER who swerved to the wrong side of a street while eating a kebab was fined €300 at Portlaoise District Court.

Garda O’Hanlon said the car was in the wrong lane on Main Street, Mountrath and he saw the driver eating from a kebab tray.

“Munching a kebab?” asked Judge Andrew Cody.

“Yes, judge,” the garda replied.

William Harty, 197 Cratloe Woods Student Village, Old Cratloe Road, Limerick admitted driving without reasonable consideration as a result of the incident on 21 October 2024.

Gda O’Hanlon said the 37-year-old was driving off from a kebab takeaway at the time. When he was stopped, he apologised and was cooperative.

He had 63 previous convictions, mainly for traffic offences, with the most recent dating back to 2016.

Defending solicitor Josephine Fitzpatrick said her client has four children with his long-term partner and is their full-time carer. They are housed in a student village by the local authority in Limerick.

The solicitor added that Mr Harty had driven just a short distance when he was stopped by gardaí and he was very apologetic.

Judge Cody convicted him of driving without reasonable consideration and fined him €300.
