Portlaoise College are all-Ireland volleyball champions once again

The victorious Portlaoise College u-16 Division A all-Ireland champions
PORTLAOISE College has reaffirmed its status as a volleyball powerhouse, securing the u-16 Division A all-Ireland title for the second time in three years.
The thrilling final took place at NUIG Kingfisher Club, Galway where the Portlaoise team faced a determined Grange Community College side.
In the first set Portlaoise, the unbeaten favourites, stormed ahead to a comfortable 15-8 lead. However, Grange responded with a flurry of aces and powerful spikes, narrowing the gap to 15-12 and forcing a Portlaoise timeout. With renewed focus, Portlaoise pulled away once more, leading 22-15, but Grange refused to back down. A determined surge saw them claw back to 23-22 before Portlaoise sealed the set 25-22.
The second set highlighted Portlaoise’s dominance.
A devastating service run put them ahead 15-6. The Portlaoise attack, orchestrated by MVP setter Enzo Tetzner, proved too strong, feeding powerful hitters such as captain Akachi Ogbulafor, vice-captain Jeremiah Phillips, and Azim Shitta. With solid defensive efforts from libero Drake Cebarce and strong blocks from Adam Odukoya and Tajus Subelko, Portlaoise cruised to a 25-15 victory, clinching the championship in straight sets.
Coach Pawel Nowakiewicz and assistant coach Nicky Walsh praised the team’s dedication and work ethic.
“The lads have been playing together since first year. Their passion for the sport continues to grow. Some of them now have three all-Ireland titles under their belts, which is a testament to their commitment. Last year’s semi-final loss only fuelled their determination to come back stronger, and they certainly did that today.” The team’s journey to victory was built on teamwork and relentless effort. Setter Enzo Tetzner played a crucial role, delivering pinpoint sets that allowed hitters like Akachi, Jeremiah, and Azim to rack up points. Jeremiah, a national team representative, was particularly vital with his consistent serves, while Zion Ebhodaghe and Marcin Schimmelpfenig led the team’s chanting and morale from the sidelines. The defensive unit, led by Drake and supported by Akachi and Jeremiah, ensured nothing hit the floor easily.
With another all-Ireland trophy added to their collection, Portlaoise College is not only celebrating this victory but also looking ahead.
Their next challenge is to take on Portadown College, Northern Ireland and establish themselves as the best team on the entire island.
For now, they can enjoy the well-earned triumph of being crowned champions once again.
