THERE is deep sadness in Laois and Kilkenny communities this week, following the death of former Castlecomer Community School principal Michael Hester.

A familiar and popular figure for generations of students from both counties, the retired principal passed away on Monday 4 May.

Formerly from Mayo and a long-time resident of Conahy, he died peacefully at St Luke's Hospital, Kilkenny.

He was involved in many local organisations and worthy causes and acted as a wonderfully entertaining MC at the Castlecomer Wellington Race for many years.

His death notice on RIP.ie states: ‘Michael will be sadly missed by his wife Mary, daughters Aoibhlinn and Doireann, sons Diarmuid and Cathal, sons-in-law Harry and Hisham, daughters-in-law Róisín and George, grandchildren Elliot, Bernadette, Edith, Henry, Lochlann, Marty and Lena, brothers Brendan and Sean and by his many friends, relatives, neighbours and past-pupils.

‘Michael is predeceased by his parents Sean and Evelyn, brothers Joe and Tom, sister Bernadette and nephew Robert.

‘Reposing at his Home in Conahy (R95 R2F7) on Friday 8 May from 4.30pm to 7.30pm, followed by prayers and removal to St Colman’s Church, Conahy, for arrival at 8pm.

Requiem Mass will be celebrated on Saturday at 1pm and he will be laid to rest in the adjoining cemetery.

The family asked that sympathisers use the online condolence link on RIP.ie to offer condolences and share memories of Michael.
