Second Mountmellick drugs raid within a month

A QUANTITY of cannabis herb was uncovered during a second drugs raid in Mountmellick within a month.
The drugs were seized at a premises in Harbour Street yesterday afternoon, during an operation involving the divisional drugs unit, the garda dog unit, plain-clothes detectives and uniformed gardaí.
One man aged in his 30s was arrested following the seizure and was brought to Portlaoise Garda Station for questioning.
A video of the drugs operation on Tuesday 4 March, recorded by an onlooker, has been circulated on social media.
The intelligence-led raid came exactly one month after the biggest-ever drug seizure in Laois, when cannabis and cocaine worth €12.8m were found at a garage in Manor Street on 4 February.
Gardaí confirmed that one man was arrested in relation to the latest drug seizure, after suspected cannabis herb was found during a search of the Harbour Street premises.
The drugs seized are subject to analysis by Forensic Science Ireland and the street value has not been disclosed as yet.
Gardaí said in a statement: ‘Gardaí carried out a search of a retail property in Mountmellick, Laois, on 4 March at approximately 3.30pm. A quantity of suspected cannabis herb was seized during the course of this operation.’
They added that the arrested man was released following questioning and is due to appear before Portlaoise District Court on 24 March.
Gardaí said that investigations are ongoing following the latest drug seizure.
