ONE of the most senior members of Laois County Council’s management team is to retire, after a long and distinguished career.
Donal Brennan, who is currently Director of Services for Housing, Corporate Affairs and Information Technology, has announced his retirement this month.
A qualified engineer and native of Westmeath, he joined Laois County Council in July 2016, having previously worked in a range of management roles with Limerick City and County Council.
He has led a number of council departments during his decade in Laois and was Returning Officer for the local elections in both 2019 and 2024.
In an email to local councillors in which he confirmed his impending retirement, Mr Brennan said: ‘I have enjoyed my time working in Laois County Council.
‘While there may have been an occasional tough day, I have enjoyed my interactions with the elected council and individual councillors, as you seek to represent the interests of individual constituents and the county as a whole.
‘The relationship between the council and the staff here in Laois is a positive and productive one – and the councillors play a huge in creating that positive attitude.
‘If there is one thing that must always be nurtured, it is that positive working relationship between the elected council and the executive – it leads to a more productive and dynamic council overall.’
Tributes are expected to be paid to the affable and long-serving official at the next monthly meeting of Laois County Council in late September.
