Gardaí are appealing for witnesses after a cyclist was killed in Mountmellick this weekend.

The road collision happened on College Avenue at about 4.30pm on Sunday.

A male pedal cyclist, aged in his 50s, suffered severe injuries when his bicycle struck a railing.

Emergency services rushed to the scene and the man was admitted to Midland Regional Hospital Portlaoise, where he passed away last night.

The road remains closed and traffic diversions are in place, while Garda Forensic Collision Investigators carry out a technical examination of the scene.

Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to come forward. They are also appealing to any road users who may have camera footage from the area at the time of the collision, including dash-cam, to make the footage available to gardaí.
