Cllr Caroline Dwane Stanley.

PORTLAOISE based Sinn Féin councillor Caroline Dwane Stanley has been nominated by the Cabinet to take on a role as a representative on a EU committee.

She was among nine nominations approved by Government to go forward as Ireland's representatives on the EU Committee of the Regions until 2030.

The places on the committee are allocated based on local election results and gender and regional balance.

Cllr Dwane Stanley has been a public representative for the Portlaoise Municipal District Council and Laois County Council since 2011 when she was co-opted onto Laois County Council when her husband, Brian Stanley was elected to the Dáil as a Sinn Féin TD. He has since resigned from the party and is now an Independent Republican TD.

Cllr Dwane Stanley contested three local elections since her co-option and has retained her council seat.

The role of the Committee of the Regions is mostly consultative and advisory and represented local and regional government at EU level.

Members are entitled to claim travel and subsistence expenses.
