A €7,500 contribution to the poor box at Portlaoise District Court last week will go towards the provision of a garda community bus in Laois.

The donation was made by a British based fireman who had previously pleaded guilty to dangerous driving along the M7 at Ballydavis, Portlaoise on 26 July.

At that hearing Kieran Scullion from 61 Stretton Road, Shirley, Solihull, England, had travelled over from Britain to pleaded guilty to the dangerous driving his Audi A3 at a speed of 172km in a 120km/ph zone.

The prosecuting garda Ross Foy said Mr Scullion told him that he had been rushing from Cork to catch a ferry in Dublin Port with two children in the car at the time.

Defence solicitor Barry Fitzgerald said that his 41-year-old client and his family regularly holiday in Bandon and that he worked as a fireman and a motorcycle instructor. He said that Mr Scullion was willing to contribute to the court poor box if the charge was reduced to careless driving.

When the case resumed last week Mr Fitzgerald said that his client had deposited €7,500 into the court poor box.

Judge Andrew Cody convicted Mr Scullion of careless driving and fined him €300.

Turning his attention to the contribution Judge Cody noted that gardaí were in the process of procuring a bus for use in the local community and directed that the €7,500 go towards that.

Garda Sergeant JJ Kirby said the garda community bus will be used to transport people with special needs and will be put to best use to the community.
