A five-car pile up on the M7 Limerick to Dublin motorway caused traffic chaos on Friday evening.

The collisions occurred shortly before 5.30pm near junction 28 and 29 west of the Limerick link road.

The motorway was closed by gardaí to allow emergency services deal with the incident.

Five cars were involved, sources said.

Despite the wreckage no people were seriously injured.

However, massive traffic tailbacks have caused traffic chaos.

Firefighters attached to several brigades in Limerick City and County, along with gardaí and ambulances, remain at the scene.

According to reliable sources, the road is likely to remain closed for a considerable period.

A Garda spokesman said: “Gardaí are at the scene of a road traffic collision on the M7 Westbound in Limerick City. We are awaiting a report. No further information is available at this time.”
