BREAKING – Death announced of Liam O’Neill, Trumera native and former President of the GAA

THE death was announced today of Liam O’Neill, regarded as one of the most influential administrators in the history of the Gaelic Athletic Association. A native of Trumera, he devoted decades of service to the promotion and development of Gaelic games at club, county, provincial and national levels.

His lifelong commitment to the Association culminated in his election as the 37th President of the GAA, a position he held from 2012 to 2014. During his presidency, he championed the growth of Gaelic games, supported improvements in governance and player welfare, and worked tirelessly to strengthen the connection between the GAA and communities throughout Ireland and abroad.

Before being elected President, O'Neill served in numerous roles, including Secretary of Laois GAA and Chairman of Leinster GAA. His experience as an educator and school principal informed a leadership style characterised by integrity, inclusiveness and a strong belief in the social value of sport.

As someone very proud of his roots in rural Laois, O’Neill gave a lifetimes service to Trumera. While always involved on one role or another with the local GAA club, he also served as teacher and principal of his local national school for almost 40 years succeeding his father in that role.

His legacy within the GAA remains one of dedicated service, visionary leadership and an unwavering commitment to the promotion of Gaelic games across Ireland and around the world.

Liam is survived by his wife Aine, son Ciaran and daughters Caoimhe and Cliodhna.
