DJ Carey's First All-Ireland Hurling Medal is Sold at Auction

An All-Ireland senior hurling medal won by jailed former hurler DJ Carey (55) has been sold at auction for well in excess of it’s guide price.

Whyte’s Auctioneers has confirmed that DJ Carey’s 1992 All-Ireland medal that he won with Kilkenny, which had been offered for sale by private treaty, has been sold.

“The medal was sold privately for an undisclosed sum,” a spokesperson for Whytes Auctioneers confirmed.

It was reported last week that a price in the region of €10,000 was expected for the medal.

However, it is believed that the sale price exceeded that figure. The exact amount of the sale has not been disclosed.

However, Carey suffered a dramatic fall from grace by falsely claiming he had cancer and needed money for medical treatment in the US.

On November 3rd, 2025, Carey received a five-and-a-half-year prison sentence after pleading guilty to 10 deception charges involving 13 complainants.

At his sentencing at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court, the court heard that his overall offending involved 22 people.

The total amount defrauded was not disclosed, though victim Noel Tynan described donating €10,000 after believing Carey’s illness.

He is currently being held at Mountjoy Prison in Dublin.

Carey, who hurled for the Young Irelands club in Gowran in County Kilkenny, won five All-Irelands in total, with the first being 1992 and later won All-Ireland’s in 1993, 2000, 2002 and 2003.

He also won nine all-Star Awards during a glittering inter-county career.
