FLOODING issues at Teampall Lane, Raheenadown must be addressed following a prolonged period of heavy rainfall in the spring, the latest meeting of Portarlington/Graigeucullen municipal district heard.

The motion was first brought forward by newly appointed Fianna Fáil Cllr Elva Kelly, who, along with identifying the rainfall as a source of flood damage, also labelled the area’s undersized drainage pipe, apparently incapable of accommodating peak surface water runoff, as a contributing factor.

In response, a representative of the area office said: "Laois Co Council has assessed the drainage issues and has confirmed the measures will involve the upgrade of the existing drain pipe networks. These works will be costed from there and all funding options will be explored to enable the addition of these works to our funding schedule."

Cllr Kelly was pleased with the response, but also identified that there was a wall on the opposite side of the road to the existing drain, weathered to almost collapsing point by the lashings of rain, fearing that it will collapse in the event of another period of heavy rainfall, which would more than likely further exacerbate flooding issues in the area. The councillor urged the area office to also look into that, which the council representative said it would.
