Council urged to install traffic calming measures at Laois beauty spot

Laois Co Council has been urged to install traffic safety ramps on the Glenbarrow road in Rosenallis

AT the latest meeting of Borris-in-Ossory/Mountmellick municipal district, the area office of Laois Co Council was urged to install traffic safety ramps on the Glenbarrow road in Rosenallis.

The motion was put forward by Fianna Fáil councillor Seamus McDonald, who received the following response from a representative of the area office:

"The provision of speed ramps on unlit rural roads will not be considered by Laois Co Council's district office."

With an outright rejection of a notice of motion proposal being rare for the district office, Cllr McDonald wondered how else they planned to slow traffic down on the Glenbarrow road. He highlighted that there are six families living on that road now, with one young man who uses a wheelchair facing significant difficulties navigating the road safely.

The representative offered to meet the councillor on site but did once again emphasise that the current policy meant they could not put ramps on any unlit stretch of road; another councillor proposed that they instead consider installing rumble strips to slow down traffic ‒ a road safety measure designed to alert drivers to the need to reduce speed.

Concluding the motion, Cllr McDonald argued that the motion had become particularly important, given how popular the Glenbarrow area had become in recent years with many new families moving into the locality.
