Court hears Laois man stole €64 worth of washing powder

A LOCAL man was given a one-month prison sentence, suspended for six months, after stealing €64 worth of washing powder from the Tesco Express store, Portlaoise.
The sentence was handed down at Portlaoise District Court last week when PJ O’Shea (34), O’Moore Place, Portlaoise pleaded guilty to the offence that took place on 31 July from the store in Fairgreen, Portlaoise.
Garda Sgt Kirby said the defendant is well-known to the court with 154 previous convictions.
Defence solicitor Barry Fitzgerald said that the previous week in court, his client had been sentenced to six months in prison. He said the offence he is before the court for was committed around the same time as the ones he was sentenced on and asked Judge Andrew Gubbins not to add any additional time onto the sentence he is serving.
Judge Gubbins went to convict Mr O’Shea of the offence and imposed a one-month custodial sentence, which he suspended for six months, which he said “won’t interfere with his release date.”
