Laois couple charged with sexual offences and child cruelty

Portlaoise Courthouse

GARDA Lisa Murray served a book of evidence on a Laois couple at Portlaoise District Court last week, who were both charged with one count of child cruelty, two counts of obtaining sexual gratification from the presence of a child and with a count each of sexual assault.

Due to the nature of the charges, those involved in the case cannot be named.

Both the man and woman are aged 36 and reside in Co Laois.

Both are charged with one count of cruelty to children on dates between 1 January 2022 and 31 December 2023 and one count each of sexual assault on the same dates. They are also charged with two counts each that on dates between 1 January 2024 and 31 December 2024, they obtained sexual gratification from the presence of a child.

Sending both forward to the 17 February sitting of Portlaoise Circuit Criminal Court, Judge Susan Fay issued them with a notice that if they intend relying on an alibi in their defence, they should notify the prosecution within 14 days.
