Laois man charged with rape

Portlaoise Courthouse
A LAOIS man accused of false imprisonment, sexual assault and two counts of rape of a woman was remanded on bail when he came before Portlaoise District Court last week.
The 37-year-old, who cannot be named due to the nature of the case and to protect the identity of the alleged victim, is charged with the offences, which allegedly took place at a location in Laois on 26 January 2023.
The court heard that the Director of Public Prosecutions has directed that the case proceed by trial on indictment.
Prosecuting gardaí said the state had no objection to bail, subject to strict conditions, and were seeking a six-week adjournment for preparation of a book of evidence.
The man’s barrister Andrew Dunne said that his client “is currently suspended from his employment, subject to the outcome of the case” and was seeking free legal aid, which was approved.
Remanding the man on his own bail to 21 July, Judge Andrew Cody adjourned the case.
