Portlaoise District Court

A DRUNKEN barefooted man, walking out in front of traffic and being aggressive towards gardaí, was given a six-month custodial sentence at Portlaoise District Court last week.

The court heard that the defendant, Damian Fiodorowicz from Carmody Way, Fairgreen, Portlaoise is currently serving a prison sentence and due for release on 19 December next year.

The 44-year-old was before the court charged with being intoxicated in a public place and to engaging in threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour on 11 September at Meehan Court, Portlaoise.

Garda Sergeant JJ Kirby said that while gardaí were on mobile patrol at 8.30pm that night they observed the defendant in a highly intoxicated state, without his shoes or socks on and walking out in front of traffic. When they went to speak with him, he became very aggressive with him and had to be arrested.

Defending solicitor Barry Fitzgerald asked Judge Susan Fay to consider not extending his client’s time in prison and any sentence she intended imposing to consider it concurrent.

Agreeing Judge Fay imposed a six-month sentence in respect to the charge of engaging in threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour to run concurrently with his present sentence and took the other matter into consideration.
