A Laois man was convicted and fined €300 in his absence after being caught driving while holding a mobile phone to his ear.

Alan Murnane (35), Ballickmoyler Road, Graiguecullen did not appear before Judge Geraldine Carthy at Carlow District Court, nor did he respond to a letter sent to him by registered post on 13 March.

Garda Byrne gave evidence that while on patrol on the evening of 27 August 2025 on the R747 road, he observed Mr Murnane driving while holding a phone to his ear. Mr Murnane admitted to the offence at the time and was issued a fixed-payment notice, which went unpaid.

The court heard that Mr Murnane has one previous conviction for a road traffic offence.

Judge Carthy convicted Mr Murnane and imposed a fine of €300, to be paid within 90 days.
