WHEN gardaí followed a driver into the car park of Portlaoise Plaza, they found he had been driving while over the legal limit.
Garda Sgt Kirby told Portlaoise District Court last week that while gardaí were on mobile patrol at 7pm on 5 October at junction 17 at Togher, just outside Portlaoise, they observed a car pull into Portlaoise Plaza car park.
When breath-tested, the driver returned a reading of 70mg of alcohol per 100ml of breath.
Sean Brown (32), Thornberry, Abbeyleix pleaded guilty to the charge of drink-driving at the time.
His solicitor Josphine Fitzpatrick said that her client works as a plant hire foreman and handed in references from his employer.
Ms Fitzpatrick said that Mr Brown’s employer described him as “a very valuable member of the team and as being a very hard worker.” She asked the court to possibly postpone any disqualification it had in mind until April “as he will have to find alternative employment.” Judge Andrew Cody convicted Mr Brown of the offence, fined him €100, disqualified him from driving for three years and postponed the disqualification until 1 April.
