A MAN whose scooter had broken down and took a chance on driving a car was stopped by gardaí and found to have no insurance on the vehicle.
Arising from the incident that took place at Higgs Lane, Ballymooney, Portlaoise, on 17 April the man was disqualified from driving for four years.
Judge Catherine Ryan was told at Portlaoise District Court last week that while gardaí were on patrol they stopped a car that was being driven by Byran Moreira from 18 Highfields, Dublin Road, Portlaoise, and found that he had no insurance cover on the car.
A fixed charge penalty notice was issued to the defendant which he paid.
Defending solicitor Philip Meagher said that his 22-yerar-old client usually relied on his scooter to get him to work. However, on the day, it was broken and “he took a chance,” to drive the car on the day.
Mr Meagher said that his client, who had no previous convictions: “Is now using the scooter full-time.” Judge Ryan convicted Mr Moreira of the offence, fined him €500 and disqualified him from driving for four years.
