Laois taxi driver went on holiday and forgot to renew insurance

Portlaoise District Court
A SELF-EMPLOYED taxi driver who was detected driving without insurance was lucky to escape a driving disqualification when he appeared at last week’s sitting of the District Court in Portlaoise.
The court heard that gardaí stopped 36-year-old Naveed Khan from Block D, Stradbrook Apartments, Stradbally Road, Portlaoise, while he was driving at Rossvale, Portlaoise on 26 June 2024 after they detected that his insurance had expired.
His solicitor Philip Meagher said that his client had been away on a family holiday at the time and had forgotten to renew his motor insurance.
“It was an oversight. He realises he has to face the music and take the consequences,” said Mr Meagher.
Noting that Mr Khan relies on his car for his livelihood, Judge Catherine Ryan said that she was not going to impose a driving disqualification.
She fined him €500, which she said was to be paid within six months, and granted him free legal aid.
