A PORTLAOISE woman was remanded in custody after pleading guilty to theft from shops in Laois.
Theresa Conroy with addresses in Greenmill Lane and Hynd’s Square, Portlaoise was before last week's sitting of Portlaoise District Court by video link from the Dóchas Centre, Women’s Prison.
She pleaded guilty to theft of baby food and wipes valued at €79.80 from Centra, Main Street, Portarlington, on 10 August, and on the same day, groceries and clothing to the sum of €1,234.76 from Tesco, Laois Shopping Centre, Portlaoise.
She also pleaded to theft of items on 13 August from EuroGiant, Lyster Square, Portlaoise, valued at €147.25, the theft of two jackets priced at €36 from Dunne Stores, Mountmellick Road, Portlaoise, on 15 September, and to the theft of food items valued at €37.25 from the Lidl store in Portlaoise on 16 September.
Judge Susan Fay wanted to know whether Ms Conroy had committed some of the offences while she had been on temporary release from prison, to which her solicitor Brian Duffy said they were.
Mr Duffy said that he had just taken over representing Ms Conroy and asked for time to consult with and take instructions from her.
Judge Fay went on to remand the defendant in custody and adjourned the case to 6 October.
