Man allegedly involved in an incident that left a man in a coma remanded on continuing bail, Portlaoise court hears
Portlaoise Courthouse
A CHARGE of assault causing harm was withdrawn by the state with the approval of Judge Andrew Gubbins against a man who was allegedly involved in an incident that left a man in a coma.
Instead, the state was given approval by the judge to replace the charge with one of assault causing serious harm.
The court heard that when the accused, Ian Barnes, Wilderness Grove, Clonmel, Co Tipperary was issued with the new charge, he made no reply.
It is alleged that the accused assaulted another man on 7 June at Main Street, Portarlington.
A previous court hearing heard that the alleged injured party was in a coma.
The court heard that the director of public prosecutions (DPP) had directed that the case should proceed on indictment.
Additional time was sought for the preparation of a book of evidence on Mr Barnes, to which Judge Gubbins agreed to.
He remanded the defendant on continuing bail to the 7 December sitting of Portlaoise District Court for the service of a book of evidence.
