IF CCTV cameras were installed in hotel bedrooms, there’d be all sorts of trouble.

So garda sgt JJ Kirby told Portlaoise District Court last week when a man came before it for allegedly trespassing in a Portlaoise hotel bedroom.

Frank McConalogue (59) from Brockagh Road, Eglinton, Co Derry was charged with trespass and with being intoxicated at the Killeshin Hotel, Dublin Road, Portlaoise on 20 December.

Garda sgt JJ Kirby said that at 3.02am on that morning, the defendant was allegedly found in a bedroom of the hotel that was not his own.

Mr McConalogue’s solicitor asked for all evidence that gardaí had gathered in the case and, if available, CCTV coverage from that morning.

In reply, sgt Kirby said: “I don’t think there’d be CCTV coverage from the bedroom. There’d be all sorts of trouble if there was.” Judge Susan Fay went on to adjourn the case for a full hearing to 26 May.
