Portlaoise District Court

A MAN who is charged with trespassing at the Hibernian Direct Provision Centre in Abbeyleix was ordered by a judge to stay out of Abbeyleix.

Fraidoon Omar from the Airways Integration Centre in Liscount Avenue, Dublin 17 was brought before last week’s sitting of Portlaoise District Court on a charge of trespass at the asylum seekers accommodation centre at Pembroke Terrace, Abbeyleix on 8 November.

Garda Mathew McGrath told Judge Susan Fay that when arrested, charged and cautioned with the offence Mr Omar replied: “I just want to be with my wife and family.” Gda. McGrath said he was seeking conditions if Mr Omar was going to be released on bail.

This included that he attends all court hearings; be of good behaviour; remains of sober habits; resides at the Airways Integration Centre; provides a phone number to gardaí and be available at all times to take their calls.

He should have no contact whatsoever by any means with the staff at the Hibernian Direct Provision Centre; informs gardaí of any change of his address and stays out of Laois with the exception of court or medical appointments.

Mr Omar’s solicitor Barry Fitzgerald said that his 40-year-old client took issue with one of the conditions, in that he stays out of Abbeyleix instead of the county of Laois.

Garda McGrath agreed to the change in the condition.

Judge Fay remanded the defendant on continuing bail to 8 December sitting of the court to allow him to enter a guilty plea or set 10 February as a preliminary date for a full hearing of the case if Mr Omar wanted to plead not guilty to the charge.

Mr Fitzgerald said that his client was seeking asylum at present and asked for a Parisian interior be assigned to his case as well as seeking free legal aid, to which Judge Fay agreed to.
