Midwife fined €750 for driving uninsured - Portlaoise court told

A MIDWIFE who was driving while uninsured was fined €750 at Portlaoise District Court last week.

Hannah Brady (31), 2 The Gatekeepers, Burrin Road, Carlow pleaded guilty to the summons of driving while uninsured at Emo Park, Co Laois on 29 September last year.

Garda Ross Foy said that at 2.50pm that day, he stopped a vehicle after detecting it had no insurance disc displayed. He said he asked Ms Brady to produce her insurance certificate and she said she would, at Carlow Garda Station, but she failed to do so.

Garda Foy said the defendant took out insurance cover for her vehicle hours after he had stopped her.

Barrister Andrew Dunne said that his client had always ensured that her vehicle had up to date insurance cover on it. However, at the time, she had been away travelling for several months and on her return had failed to check to see that her insurance was in date.

He said she had paid a fixed charged penalty notice for the non-display of the insurance disc.

Mr Dunne said that Ms Brady has been a midwife for the past four years and has a letter from her hospital where she is employed of how she needs her car to carry out her work.

Judge Andrew Cody ruled as outlined.
