Portlaoise Court: Chinese restaurant owner charged with entering state illegally

Portloaise Courthouse

THE OWNER of a Chinese restaurant was brought before Portlaoise District Court on foot of a bench warrant relating to an alleged offence that took place 15 years ago.

Garda Paul Dooley, who executed the warrant, said that 38-year-old Li Xu, Sarsfield Street, Kilmallock, Limerick had been charged at Dublin Airport on 26 May 2010 with entering the state without a valid passport or proper documentation and that he failed to produce a passport or authorised travel documents on the date.

Garda Dooley alleged that when Mr Xu entered the country in 2010, he did so without a passport, driving licence or any other form of travel documentation.

He said that the defendant had previously lived in Portlaoise at an address in Bianconi Way.

Garda Dooley said that Mr Xu, who has since received an Irish residency permit, now runs his own Chinese restaurant in Cork, where he employs a number of people.

Judge Andrew Cody remanded Mr Xu on his own bail of €500 with a €200 cash lodgment to appear at Blanchardstown District Court and certified for a Mandarin interpreter to be present.
