Portlaoise Court: Judge says woman is 'spoofing'

The case was adjourned at Portlaoise District Court

JUDGE Andrew Cody said that a woman who told him she had obtained her car insurance through Revolut bank was ‘spoofing’, when she appeared before him at Portlaoise District Court last week.

Rebecca Ann Lane from Ashgrove, Mountmellick was summonsed before the court for having no insurance, when gardaí stopped her driving on 14 March 2025 at Harbour Street, Mountmellick.

Defending barrister Hugo Mills said that his 25-year-old client thought she was insured at the time. When she went to log in to her account on her phone, she couldn’t get back into the insurance providers’ application.

Garda Roy Cooper said he checked and found that she had taken out insurance on 8 October 2024 and that it expired the same year on 17 December.

Mr Mills said: “She doesn’t know why her policy was terminated.”

Judge Cody said: “She said that she was insured with Revolut bank and she was stopped driving four months later.”

Mr Mills said that the insurance taken out by his client was from Revolut bank and that in turn comes by way of another insurance company.

Judge Cody remarked: “I don’t believe whatever spoofing she’s going on with. She doesn’t seem to know what insurance company she was with.”

He went on to adjourn the case to 25 September, to allow time for Ms Lane to clarify matters in the meantime.
