A MAN charged with cruelty to children and two counts of sexual assault is to be returned for trial, following a family law sitting of Portlaoise District Court last week.

The 55-year-old, who cannot be named to protect the identity of the alleged victims, is charged with offences that allegedly took place over a 10-year period, on dates between 22 December 1999 and 2 January 2009.

The court heard that the Director of Public Prosecutions has directed that the case be dealt with by trial on indictment in a higher court.

Judge Andrew Cody remanded the accused on continuing bail to the 15 June sitting of the court, for the service of a book of evidence.
