Portlaoise Court: Speeding nurse escapes driving ban

A CRITICAL care nurse escaped a conviction and a driving disqualification at Portlaoise District Court when she agreed to donate €1,000 to North Tipperary Hospice.

Megan Maher, 4 Glebe View, Roscrea, Co Tipperary pleaded guilty to driving at 95kph in an 80kph zone at The Great Heath, Portlaoise on 5 July last.

Defending solicitor Josephine Fitzpatrick said that her client works as a critical care nurse at University Hospital Limerick and had accumulated a number of penalty points while travelling to work.

She said that if Ms Maher is convicted on the latest summons, it would put her over the penalty points limit and she would automatically be disqualified from driving.

Ms Fitzpatrick said the offence took place “out where Tracey’s Restaurant is, which is quite a wide stretch of road”.

She said her 37-year-old client was asking the court to leave her without a conviction on this offence.

Judge Andrew Cody struck out the summons after Ms Maher agreed to make the donation.
