Portlaoise Court: Stole karaoke machine from local Lidl store

Portlaoise Courthouse
A MAN who stole a karaoke machine and a jacket from a supermarket in Portlaoise was remanded in custody when he appeared by video link at the local district court.
The court was told that Corey O'Brien, with an address at 42 Rockboro Heights, Waterpark, Carrigaline, Co Cork had been in custody on foot of a bench warrant over the incident and that he had had 52 previous convictions.
When the charge of theft was put to the 27-year old defendant, he pleaded guilty to the offence, which occurred at Lidl, James Fintan Lalor Avenue, Portlaoise on 17 January.
Before Judge Andrew Cody passed sentence, defending solicitor Josephine Fitzpatrick pointed out that her client had already spent six days in custody over the matter.
Sergeant JJ Kirby said that gardaí were looking to have Mr O’Brien disqualified from driving as he used a car in the execution of the offence.
Judge Cody made no decision on that matter. He said that the defendant should be given an opportunity to respond to the allegation that he was driving the car.
“He wasn't on his own. There was another man with him,” said Ms Fitzpatrick.
Judge Cody remanded Mr O'Brien in custody until the next hearing of the case on 6 February.
