Funeral announced for third teen killed in M9 crash

FUNERAL arrangements for one of the five teenagers who died in the crash on the M9 on Sunday morning have been announced.

Jeremy O’Brien (17), from Carlow town, died when the car he was travelling in drove down the wrong side of the M9 motorway and collided with another vehicle near Moone, Co Kildare.

His death notice reads: ‘The death has occurred of Jeremy (Bobbles) O’Brien, Burrin Manor, Tullow Road, Carlow. Tragically; Jeremy will be sadly missed by his heartbroken mother Margaret, his loving brothers Jamie, Felix, Myles and Vincent, grandparents Mary and Felix, uncles Patrick and Myles, cousins, extended family and friends.’ 

Jeremy’s funeral will arrive at the Church of the Holy Family, Askea on Sunday for reception prayers at 7pm, before his funeral Mass on Monday at 11am, followed by burial at St Mary’s Cemetery, Carlow.

The funeral arrangements for one of the other deceased teenagers from Carlow town, Alex McCarthy (16), were released yesterday.

Alex’s funeral is taking place tomorrow this Friday at 2.15pm at the Church of the Holy Family, Askea.

Alex's cousin Joe ‘Joey’ Carthy, from Clonmullion, Athy, was the first of the five deceased to have a death notice published on RIP.ie. However, this was later taken down from the site.

There had been significant activity in the condolences section of his death notice, with many messages containing abusive material directed at the teenager and his family.

There has also been significant commentary online in the wake of the crash, with tribute posts from family members of the deceased becoming the subject of thousands of critical comments.

An Garda Síochána released an official statement yesterday morning appealing for the privacy of the families to be respected.

The statement read: ‘The families of the victims of the M9 collision have asked for their privacy to be respected. They wish to inform media that they are not providing interviews at this time.’
