The latest meeting of the Borris-in-Ossory/Mountmellick municipal district heard that Laois Co Council should carry out road remedial works outside the Keeley residence in Mountrath on the L1652 road to alleviate the constant flooding issues that plague the road.

The motion was put forward by independent Cllr James Kelly, who was given this response by the area office: ‘The maintenance crew will clean out the existing stormwater network at this location. This stretch of road is included in the 2026 RI works programme and this will rectify the road flooding issue at Keeleys.’ In explaining the case to his fellow councillors, Cllr Kelly made a point of highlighting how road safety had become such a dominant issue in the Borris-in-Ossory municipal district, with 16 of the 18 motions brought to the meeting pertaining to road safety.

Returning to his main point, the councillor highlighted that remedial works on the road would not only benefit the Keeley residence specifically but the 13 other houses on the road. Cllr Kelly said: "I would hope the roadworks could be expedited in a timely fashion because it is not just for cars, it's a road safety issue, but also for pedestrians and the family that are exiting from the front gate of their house as well. So, thanks for the reply and I look forward to the works."
