Laois leads the league table for providing social housing in Ireland

Laois County Council tops the Irish league table for delivering social housing
WHEN it comes to delivering social housing Laois County Council is head and shoulders above all other councils around Ireland.
A recent league table released by the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage showed that Laois County Council is the top performing local authority in Ireland delivering social housing.
The data showed that Laois County Council surpassed its target goal of 359 housing units with 670 homes – 187% above its goal. The figure included a total of 155 homes delivered in 2024 alone, almost double its target of 80.
The league table figures focus on each local authority’s delivery of new-build social housing between 2022 and 2024, the targets for which are outlined in the government’s Housing for All plan.
Commenting on the figures the Chief Executive of Laois County Council Michael Rainey said: “ Supporting and enabling the provision of housing to serve the people of Laois is a key priority for Laois County Council, as outlined in our 2024-2029 Corporate Plan.
“I am enormously proud to see our team’s hard work recognised at national level as we continue to surpass our social housing targets. We will continue to deliver well designed housing which is appropriate for the needs of the community.”
Mr Rainey said that affordable housing is also a priority for the council which recently launched the new Local Authority Affordable Purchase Scheme at Oak Vale Meadows in Stradbally.
He said that prospective homeowners are invited to apply for these new homes through their online application portal – which will be accessible through the council’s website until Friday 25 July or by emailing affordablepurchase@laoiscoco.ie for more information on the scheme and how it works.
