Portlaoise Rotary Club launch first ever disabilities skydiving initiative in Ireland

The launch of the 'Handitandem' initiative takes place at Clonbullogue Airfield in Offaly on Wednesday 2 April at 2pm.

FOR the first time ever in Ireland, an initiative aimed at people with physical disabilities to skydive in tandem, will be launched by Portlaoise and Naas Rotary Clubs.

The launch of the ‘Handitandem’ initiative takes place at Clonbullogue Airfield in Offaly on Wednesday 2 April at 2pm.

The launch will be attended by some of those intending to jump, members of the parachute club as well as leading representatives of both rotary clubs, the Irish Wheelchair Association, Laois County Council and the head of Rotary Ireland.

The event will be hosted by the President of Portlaoise Rotary Club Maeve Furey and the Head of Rotary Ireland Seamus Parle.

The idea of ‘Handitandem’ originated with a French Rotary Club whose members were invited to visit Portlaoise Rotary Club. After describing the initiative and the positive effects it has on participants, members of Portlaoise Rotary Club then decided to run the initiative here in Ireland.

Members of the club have been liaising with the Irish Wheelchair Association and Laois Sport Partnership and the plan is to put up to 10 people in the air in early May.
