Slieve Bloom group celebrates 50th anniversary

The group will celebrate its 50th anniversary with a plaque unveiling and community gathering on Sunday 27 April

A VOLUNTARY group that promotes and protects the majestic Slieve Bloom Mountains will celebrate its 50th anniversary this month.

The Slieve Bloom Association’s golden milestone will be marked with the unveiling of a plaque at the glorious Ridge of Capard on Sunday 27 April, followed by a meal and music at Rosenallis Community Centre.

For the past half-century, the organisation has worked to promote and maintain the breathtaking mountain range that straddles Laois and Offaly, running regular events that include guided walks and festivals as well as arts, cultural and social gatherings.

Since it was founded in 1975, the Association has hosted annual events such as the Rambling House, the Imbolc Festival, the May Bush festival, annual tours and Fraughan Sunday. Each one is steeped in tradition, storytelling, music and connection to the land.

Over the decades, the Slieve Bloom Association has also been successful in securing key funding that allowed for the restoration and enhancement of trails, signage, heritage sites and public amenities throughout the Slieve Blooms, helping ensure that the area remains accessible, welcoming and sustainable for future generations.

The plaque unveiling ceremony at noon in the Ridge of Capard near Rosenallis will be followed at 2pm by a three-course meal, with music by Martin Delaney, at the community centre (R32VK64). It promises to be a wonderful day filled with stories and memories from the beautiful area.

Booking is essential by calling 087 6683792. Tickets are €20 each, while admission is free for children aged under 16.
